QLD future in good hands

DBA held the first of the “Big Kids” camps in Brisbane on Sunday Feb 14th at Brisbane Basketball in Auchenflower, and it was a great success.

While we didn’t have huge numbers, we had 19 kids turn up and they all seemed to have a great time. This was a big turnout for a development camp for deaf sports in QLD.

There were 11 boys aged from 6 – 16 years of age, and 8 girls aged from 8 – 13 years of age. Parents brought their children from all over Brisbane with 7 coming from regional areas such as the Gold Coast and Toowoomba.

It was a good mix, with various skill levels. Some kids with some great potential there for the future.

QDBA came and provided information on what was happening particularly about ongoing camps in the region. Several parents who were there indicated they would be prepared to help. One parent has since gone back to her mainstream basketball club and has gathered support for future camps in the Gold Coast area.

Deaf Sports Recreation Queensland also attended and were extremely impressed with the camp.

Gold Coast Blaze were particularly helpful with a half dozen balls, wrist bands and head bands which the kids wore on the way home. Basketball Australia provided some Aussie Hoops singlets for the camp which the kids thought were great. DBA created some “Fact Sheets” for parents to take home on basic information on deaf basketball, and the opportunities for kids at the Australian Deaf Games, World Championships and the Deaflympics.

The women’s Geckos Head Coach Janelle Bressow and Geckos 2nd Assistant Coach and Captain Nic Taschke organised and ran the 3 hour session and did a tremendous job. Very professional and a credit to DBA. The camp looked very professional...particularly the coaches using a constant mixture of aural and Auslan instructions which made everyone feel comfortable. The 3 hours was a combination of basic skills, games that provided a lot of fun, and social interaction that many have not had before.

Geckos players Cate Johnson and Kerry Bevan also helped with the sessions and organising for the lunch for the break.

We were very happy with the result and will soon announce the news and dates for camps in the other capital cities.
